- Flight Times
If possible, try to schedule flights that do not interfere with their sleep schedules. If your child doesn’t do well on little sleep, this will minimize restlessness, fits, and tantrums.
For young children (ages under two, specifically), it may be easier to fly during their sleep schedules so they take a nap while in the air.
- Early Boarding
Many airlines ask families with young children to board first. This allows parents to get their kids situated before the rest of the passengers board.

Snacks your child can easily hold are great ways to occupy grabby hands and prevent tantrums. Avoid packing anything messy, sticky, large or sugary. Healthy cereals and carrots are an excellent option.
Although many airlines provide meals for long flights, chances are your child won’t eat it. You should prepare for such a situation and pack wholesome foods. A child deprived of proper nutrition will be a cranky passenger.
- A Short Walk
Allow your child to stand and stretch. If space allows, walk with your child in the aisle. Frequent bathroom breaks also allow the child a brief change in scenery and keep busy legs active.
- Pack Gum
For children, especially, their ears can become uncomfortable as the plane takes off and gains more altitude. Chewing gum alleviates the pressure quickly and effectively. It’s a great option for young children who might not understand how to keep their ears from popping.
